How to Free Up iCloud Storage Without Deleting a Single Photo
I love taking photos. My phone is a time machine.
Every picture brings back a memory. That trip to the beach. My niece's first steps. That random sunset that looked like a painting.
Deleting them felt wrong. Like erasing part of my life.
So when iCloud told me I was out of space, I panicked. I thought I had to choose. Pay more or lose my photos.
But I was wrong.
There's a third option. And it doesn't involve deleting anything.
Here's how I freed up 15GB of iCloud storage without deleting a single photo.
📸 The One Setting That Changed Everything
I'm going to tell you about a setting I wish I knew about years ago.
It's called Optimize iPhone Storage. And it's a game-changer.
Here's what it does. Your photos stay in iCloud at full resolution. Your phone keeps smaller versions.
You still see all your photos. You can still zoom in. You can still share them. They look exactly the same.
But they take up way less space on your device and your backup.
I turned this on and freed up 12GB instantly. 12GB. Without deleting a single photo.
Here's how:
- Open Settings
- Tap Photos
- Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage
That's it. Three taps. 12GB freed.
💾 Old Backups Are Taking Up Space (And You Don't Need Them)
Here's something I discovered that made me feel stupid.
I had backups from my old iPhone. The one I replaced two years ago.
That backup was 4GB. 4GB of space I was paying for. For a phone I don't even own anymore.
I also had backups for apps I don't use. Games I played once. Apps I deleted years ago.
All of them were taking up space. And I didn't need any of them.
Here's how to clean it up:
- Go to Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud
- Tap Manage Storage → Backups
- You'll see a list of all your backups
- Tap the ones you don't need → Delete & Turn Off Backup
I deleted backups from three old devices. Freed up 6GB. No photos deleted.
💬 Messages Are Eating Your Storage (Without You Realizing)
I didn't think about Messages. It's just text, right?
Wrong.
Messages store photos, videos, voice notes, and attachments. And they stay there forever. Unless you tell them not to.
I had years of messages. Videos my sister sent me. Photos my friend shared. Voice notes I listened to once.
All of it was taking up space.
One setting fixed this:
- Go to Settings → Messages
- Tap Keep Messages
- Change from Forever to 30 Days
Messages older than 30 days are automatically deleted. Including attachments.
I freed up 3GB. No photos deleted. Just old messages I didn't need anyway.
📁 iCloud Drive Has Hidden Junk
I opened the Files app. I went to iCloud Drive. I started looking around.
I found old PDFs from two years ago. Screenshots I took for work. Documents I didn't even remember saving.
I spent 10 minutes cleaning it up. Found 4GB of files I didn't need.
Here's what to do:
- Open the Files app
- Go to iCloud Drive
- Sort by size (tap the three dots → Sort → Size)
- Delete the largest files you don't need
- Don't forget to check Recently Deleted and empty it
4GB freed. Still no photos deleted.
🖼️ Shared Albums Don't Count Toward Your Storage
This is a trick I wish I knew earlier.
Shared albums are free. They don't use your iCloud storage.
I created a shared album called "Family Photos." I added hundreds of pictures. They didn't touch my storage limit.
I created another one called "Travel Memories." Same thing. Zero storage used.
You can create as many shared albums as you want. Each one can have up to 5,000 photos. And you can share them with up to 100 people.
The photos stay in the shared album. They don't count toward your iCloud storage. And they still appear in your regular Photos app.
This is a loophole. Use it.
📧 Mail Attachments Are Hidden Storage Hogs
I don't use iCloud Mail much. So I assumed it wasn't using storage.
I was wrong.
Old emails with attachments count toward your iCloud storage. Even if you don't use Mail as your primary email.
Here's what I did:
- Open the Mail app
- Go to your Trash folder
- Delete everything
- Check your Junk folder too
I found 2GB of old emails and attachments. Gone.
🗑️ Empty Recently Deleted (Yes, It Counts)
Here's something that surprised me.
Photos and files in "Recently Deleted" still count toward your storage.
I had photos in there from months ago. I thought they were gone. They weren't.
They were just sitting there, taking up space, waiting to be permanently deleted.
Here's how to fix it:
- Open Photos app
- Scroll down to Recently Deleted
- Tap Select → Delete All
I freed up 1GB. Still no photos deleted. Just finally getting rid of what I already marked for deletion.

📌 Here's What I Learned
I was ready to pay for more storage. I was convinced I had no other option.
Then I actually looked at what was in my iCloud. And I realized I was paying for junk I didn't need.
Old backups. Messages from years ago. Files I forgot existed. Emails I never opened.
None of it was important. But all of it was costing me space.
I freed up 15GB without deleting a single photo. 15GB. That's three times the free storage limit.
If I can do it, you can too.
Take 10 minutes. Check your iCloud storage. Delete the junk. Keep the memories.
Your photos are safe. And so is your wallet.
